BALANCE BEYOND THE MAT

Balance Beyond The Mat

a Collaborative Yoga and Pilates Retreat

with Abe Ahern & Rebecca Bly

February 2-8th, 2020

Santa Teresa, Costa Rica

Meet Abe & Rebecca

Join Abe and Rebecca for a week of collaboratively taught workshops overlooking the Pacific Ocean in the naturally stunning and vibrant beach town of Santa Teresa, Costa Rica. Enjoy twice daily classes with expert instructors, local activities to help immerse you into the Pura Vida lifestyle and plenty of free time to explore town, take a surf lesson, walk miles of expansive beach coastline or just relax by the pool with a tropical fruit smoothie.

What is this year's theme about?

Can we stay stronger, longer? We all want to be healthy for a good long time, but the constant messages telling us to push past our limits to be healthier can start to take its toll on our bodies and our spirits. We need to make wiser choices in how we move and think so that we can keep doing the things that make us happy.

In this year's theme, Balance Beyond The Mat, Abe and Rebecca, each masters of their own crafts, create classes and workshops collaboratively, interweaving two unique but beautifully complimentary practices. Joining other like-minded people in this magical place will leave you feeling inspired, refreshed and at home in your body.

What People Are Saying

What would I have done differently? Absolutely nothing. I loved every minute.

My most memorable moment? There are too many to choose just one. Watching the sunset and feeling the breeze while in the midst of a workshop on the deck overlooking the ocean. Having a delicious lunch of fresh fish while drinking out of coconuts at the gorgeous beach on Tortugas Island after a morning of snorkeling. Standing up on a surfboard for the first time. Enjoying delicious smoothies with my feet in the pool. Enjoying a much needed massage while listening to the ocean waves. And, of course, the feeling of strengthening and caring for my body during the class sessions every day, while learning from the thoughtful expert teachings.

What did I learn about myself? I remained stronger overall through the week than I expected to; particularly with the yoga (and the surfing!), where I'm not as flexible, I absolutely latched onto the "I'm basically ok" mantra. It seems simple but, as a Type A person who usually sees the options as "perfection or not at all", it was helpful to be reminded that it's ok to work towards things over time, at your own level, and not be frustrated if you can't immediately achieve what others can.

Rebecca, you are a gem.  Costa Rica is fabulous as it is, BUT the trip was amazing really because of you and your ability to teach yoga, to entertain us with your delicious and adorable personality, to allow us to effortlessly flow through the day to perfectly execute on every detail of every moment, and to leave us with a PERMANENT smile on our faces such that every night since being home I have been Googling airfares back to SJO.  THANK YOU for making our trip so magical and memorable.  We’ll be back for more!!!

 About Your Instructors

Abe and Rebecca will be your hosts and instructors on this retreat.

Abe Ahern, Pilates

Abe Ahern was drawn to Pilates by its focus on the uniform development of physical strength and the total body mobilization and awareness it makes possible.  As an injured veteran who found many workouts counterproductive and demoralizing, Abe found that Pilates not only improved physical strength and mobility, but also promoted a deeper sense of knowledge and comfort in his own body.

Abe apprenticed with Mariska Breland and is a Balanced Body-trained apparatus instructor, and is currently the senior instructor and teacher trainer at Fuse Pilates in Washington, DC.  He has led thousands of hours of individual and group Pilates instruction, with special focus on using Pilates for strength training.  He also has extensive experience in Pilates for injury rehabilitation.

Above all, Abe enjoys teaching movement through an approach that combines physical education and structural know-how with a fun, upbeat, and affirming attitude to promote a deeper knowledge of and acceptance of the body.

Rebecca Bly, Yoga

Rebecca completed her 200-hour Teacher Training in Washington, DC in 2006 in the Vinyasa Flow style of yoga and has been teaching ever since. She specializes in progressive flows with imaginative and deliberate cuing, starting slowly and building to a challenging peak pose so students feel challenged and supported. Her classes are inspired by the teachings of Shiva Rea, Cyndi Lee and Tara Brach.

Rebecca came to yoga as a teen looking for a quick escape from high school phys. ed. classes. She always loved falling out of handstands so was immediately taken by the way yoga exponentially expanded her physical self-awareness as a shy teen. It just felt really good.

She loves surfing and storytelling in her free time. Rebecca currently lives in Costa Rica and offers private yoga retreats for small groups seeking a week of inspiration and rejuvenation in Santa Teresa. Learn more at www.MyYogaRetreatCostaRica.com

While you gaze out over the Pacific Ocean for richly colored sunsets, hear the howler monkeys roar through the trees and smell the ylang-ylang trees sweetly wafting through the breeze. Getting to Your Retreat
Getting to Your Retreat

Your retreat at the Horizon Hotel is located in the town of Santa Teresa, on the southern tip of the Nicoya Peninsula on the Pacific Coast of Costa Rica. This surfer's paradise is off the beaten path and it is a two-step process to get here.

The first and last days of the retreat are considered travel days; Sunday you will arrive and we will briefly meet for a welcome circle at 630pm before our opening dinner together. On Saturday, we will have final breakfast together  at 8am before your departure. Please plan your travel accordingly so you don't miss out on any of the scheduled activities.

Your airfare and ground transportation are not included in the price of your retreat.

Step 1. Fly to International Airport SJO in San Jose, Costa Rica.
Take an international flight to SJO (Juan Santamaria International Airport) in San Jose, Costa Rica. Many airlines fly to SJO. Another option is to fly into LIR Liberia International Airport, a smaller airport that has similar but less frequent options for transferring to your retreat location.

Step 2. Take a domestic flight or shuttle bus to the hotel.

From SJO airport, it is a quick 20-minute flight on a puddle jumper with Sansa Airlines to the local town of Tambor ($90-$120 each way). From the airport in Tambor, you have two options how to transfer to the hotel, about 45-minutes away. Option 1: Sansa offers a shuttle ($25 per person each way) which can be booked with your ticket purchase. Option 2: If you're traveling with friends, a shared taxi may be more affordable with 3+ people (about $60).. Other domestic airlines now fly from San Jose to Tambor airport: Green Airways and Aerobell (based out of San Jose, Pavas airport).

Step 2 Alternative: We highly recommend taking the 20-minute flight to get to town as it will minimize your travel time and maximize beach time, however if you're not a big fan of small propeller planes, you can opt to take a shuttle bus from the airport to the hotel.  The shuttle takes about 6 hours total in an air conditioned van and includes a beautiful 70-minute ferry ride across the bay. It costs $50 each way.

We will provide more detailed travel information once you are registered and will be happy to assist you in booking your travel. Don't hesitate to ask if you have questions ahead of time.
