Strength Beyond The Mat
a Collaborative Yoga and Pilates Retreat
with Abe Ahern & Rebecca Bly
February 3-9, 2019
Santa Teresa, Costa Rica
Meet Abe & Rebecca
What do Yoga & Pilates truly have in common?
Tired of "Core Yoga" or "Yogilates" classes with 30-minutes of Pilates followed by 30-minutes of yoga that fall short of really explaining how and why we're combining these two unique disciplines?
Regardless of their difference in origin, purpose, and practice, the wisdom of each are beautifully complementary and brilliantly beneficial for your whole health.
Join Abe Ahern and Rebecca Bly, as they seamlessly weave together concepts from both disciplines into classes and in-depth workshops. In these sessions, you will learn to use tools from Pilates to mobilize strength and prepare the joints and muscles for controlled movement. Then explore strength beyond the physical by incorporating yoga postures, breathwork and meditation techniques to cultivate greater clarity, confidence and courage on and off the mat.
Abe and Rebecca will create classes and workshops that continually and collaboratively employ these concepts against real-world movements and challenges from your practice in order to nurture physical awareness, expand on your personal concept of strength and challenge your idea of what it means to feel strong both inside and out.

About Your Instructors
Abe and Rebecca will be your hosts and instructors on this retreat.
Abe Ahern, Pilates
Abe Ahern was drawn to Pilates by its focus on the uniform development of physical strength and the total body mobilization and awareness it makes possible. As an injured veteran who found many workouts counterproductive and demoralizing, Abe found that Pilates not only improved physical strength and mobility, but also promoted a deeper sense of knowledge and comfort in his own body.
Abe apprenticed with Mariska Breland and is a Balanced Body-trained apparatus instructor, and is currently the senior instructor and teacher trainer at Fuse Pilates in Washington, DC. He has led thousands of hours of individual and group Pilates instruction, with special focus on using Pilates for strength training. He also has extensive experience in Pilates for injury rehabilitation.
Above all, Abe enjoys teaching movement through an approach that combines physical education and structural know-how with a fun, upbeat, and affirming attitude to promote a deeper knowledge of and acceptance of the body.
Rebecca completed her 200-hour Teacher Training in Washington, DC in 2006 in the Vinyasa Flow style of yoga and has been teaching ever since. She specializes in progressive flows with imaginative and deliberate cuing, starting slowly and building to a challenging peak pose so students feel challenged and supported. Her classes are inspired by the teachings of Shiva Rea, Cyndi Lee and Tara Brach.
Rebecca came to yoga as a teen looking for a quick escape from high school phys. ed. classes. She always loved falling out of handstands so was immediately taken by the way yoga exponentially expanded her physical self-awareness as a shy teen. It just felt really good.
She loves surfing and storytelling in her free time. Rebecca offers private yoga retreats for small groups seeking a week of inspiration and rejuvenation in Santa Teresa. Learn more at www.MyYogaRetreatCostaRica.com.

About Your Hotel
The word "Eden" comes to mind as Horizon's Hotel is nestled among lush tropical gardens on a steep hill side above town, affording you a stunning view of the ocean from the yoga deck, Tea House and most of the villas. While you gaze out over the Pacific for richly colored sunsets, hear the howler monkeys roar through the trees and smell the ylang-ylang trees sweetly wafting through the breeze. When you walk up the stone steps to their restaurant, the organic Tea House, you'll feel a sense of relief wash through you and know that this is a place where it's easy to just be.
A family-owned establishment, Yoav and Gali and their two boys will welcome you as part of their own family. You'll see Yoav making omelettes and fresh juices each morning after teaching his own yoga class and Gali will always be there with a smile to help you with anything you need to make your stay more comfortable.

Getting to Your Retreat
Getting to Your Retreat
Your retreat at the Horizon Hotel is located in the town of Santa Teresa, on the southern tip of the Nicoya Peninsula on the Pacific Coast of Costa Rica. This surfer's paradise is off the beaten path and it is a two-step process to get here.
The first and last days of the retreat are considered travel days; Sunday you will arrive and we will briefly meet for a welcome circle at 530pm before our opening dinner together. On Saturday, we will have final breakfast together at 8am before your departure. Please plan your travel accordingly so you don't miss out on any of the scheduled activities.
Your airfare and ground transportation are not included in the price of your retreat.
Step 1. Fly to International Airport SJO in San Jose, Costa Rica.
Take an international flight to SJO (Juan Santamaria International Airport) in San Jose, Costa Rica. Many airlines fly to SJO. Tip: Make sure to check with Southwest Airlines as they usually offer non-stop service from BWI.
Step 2. Take a domestic flight or shuttle bus to the hotel.
From SJO airport, it is a quick 20-minute flight on a puddle jumper with Sansa Airlines to the local town of Tambor ($90-$120 each way). From the airport in Tambor, a taxi will take you to the hotel. This can be arranged as an additional service with Sansa when you purchase your ticket and costs $25 each way and takes about 45 minutes.
Step 2 Alternative: We highly recommend taking the 20-minute flight to get to town as it will minimize your travel time and maximize beach time, however if you're not a big fan of small propeller planes, you can opt to take a shuttle bus from the airport to the hotel. The shuttle takes about 6 hours and includes a beautiful ferry ride across the bay. It costs $50 each way.
We will provide more detailed travel information once you are registered and will be happy to assist you in booking your travel. Don't hesitate to ask if you have questions ahead of time.
